  • Vintage LA: Alison Martino Uncovers A Forgotten City
  • May 10, 2011 – “Forgotten history” from the 70s means I’m officially super old.

  • Why a Thin Man Remake is Doomed to Fail
  • May 10, 2011 – I recently saw the 1994 Warren Beatty/Annette Benning remake of “Love Affair”. Its best predecessor, not even the original, is “An Affair to Remember”, with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. That movie isn’t even a favorite of mine, but all through the Beatty version, I couldn’t help thinking that the primary reason the older movie is better is the chemistry and charisma of the stars. An awful lot of what we call movie stars in the modern era are simply too tepid and self-conscious to be as entertaining as their golden age counterparts. There are a few exceptions, which I’ll think of if you give me half an hour or so.

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver separate
  • May 10, 2011 – for some reason, this makes me kind of sad.

  • GOPer endorses Michelle Obama's fitness campaign
  • May 9, 2011 – I’m having a “stop the insanity” moment. Do we even need to say that physical fitness and healthy eating is good, whoever promotes it? As long as you’re not trying to sell me a diet in a pill, or an exercise machine made of rubber bands, it’s a good thing. OK? OK!

  • Chipotle ADA Suit Is a Big, Fat Flop
  • May 7, 2011 – A pretty reasonable take on ADA lawsuits. I’m not much of a chain restaurant user, for a number of reasons. One of these is that the lack of printed menus, and the poor communications skills of many (not all) fast-food workers waste my time. I have no desire to sue anyone. I do have many alternatives. But I hope somewhere, my soft boycott will eventually do some good. And I would love it if truly worthy ADA suits could somehow change a business’ infrastructure without resulting in big paydays for plaintiffs.
