September 2, 2010 – Several years go, a relative was raptly watching the US Open. I asked who she was rooting for and she said “Oh, the American, of course!” Never mind that there are lots of Americans and non-Americans competing. I don’t think she actually saw any players, just flags.
September 2, 2010 – I have very mixed feelings about this post. On the one hand, the author has obviously made a compassionate connection to someone unlike herself, and that’s terrific. On the other, the very idea that there is a world outside the closed car window, with people and the sounds they make in it, seems utterly surprising to the author. We’re out here, lady, and some of us have all of our teeth.
