February 4, 2011 – Look, I enjoy making fun of Texas Republicans as much as the next libr’l citizen of the People’s Republic of Austin. but this is a long stretch for a joke. Several points:
1) Joe Strauss had to fight for re-election primarily because he is not as conservative as the Tea Party red meaters he now serves with, and because he has not ruled with an iron fist. In other words, a few people saw a guy they didn’t like anyway and added his religion to the baggage they believed he already carried.
2) The irony is that this segment will leave a lot of Texans scratching their heads, having never realized either that Joe Strauss was jewish, or that it had been made an issue in the Speaker’s race.
3) Exceedingly strict voter ID legislation and a requirement that women seeking abortions see sonograms wer both declared EMERGENCY legislation by the governor. And yet, The Daily Show focused on the Speaker’s race? C’mon guys, mine the comedy platinum, not the gold.
February 4, 2011 – You don’t have to read this or anything: shared mostly for the guy’s name. the man in charge of the Texas power grid is named Trip Doggett. I think I like that better than Chet Hanks, but for all the same reasons. But instead of a quarterback, I think he oughtta be a tackle.
If you have any interest in the interview, the background is that ERCOT instituted rolling blackouts when Texas’ grid could not handle the demand spike caused by unusually cold weather. And everyone got pissed off because they were taken by surprise, and because ERCOT didn’t even tell people to conserve energy at peak usage times.
